My Top 8 Things To Do In Oribi Gorge
The minute you set foot at Lake Eland Game Reserve where most of activities are enjoyed, you know it’s going to go down. It almost feels like they want you to make up your mind there and then, because as you enter the gate you get to see what people get up to there. What immediately caught my attention was how serious they take safety, the induction is so thorough and they make sure that you get it right. After registration you get assigned a qualified trainer who will show you everything you need to know and take you down step by step.
With the activities offered you get a birds eye perspective of the Lehrs falls, the lovely lake by the campsite, game, the magical landscape of the area and the gorge and where you can spot the Baboon’s Castle. The Oribi Gorge is packed with exhilarating experiences that are made to be enjoyed by everyone who is brave enough to try it out 😉.
I don’t know about this but a lot of people see zip lining as a relaxed option as opposed to the Wild Swing. Lake Eland Game Reserve is the thrill seekers paradise, with a 4.5km Zip Line tour which soars across the magnificent Oribi Gorge. The tour consists of 14 zip line slides starting at the top of the Oribi Gorge. Once you have finished the 10mins induction, you will then Zip Line across the top of the gorge from the Lehr’s Waterfall strapped into your full body harness in total comfort while admiring the spectacular views. A huge win, if you ask me.
White Water Rafting
Nothing beats the rush you get as you put your life jackets to hit the water and brave rapids of different grades. White water rafting down the Umzimkhulu River will certainly get your blood pumping. This experience might take up to six hours in the water but it will be all worth it in the end. Umzimkhulu River, who’s source can be traced to the Drakensberg mountains and mouth at the Indian Ocean, is a powerful river that offers thrill seekers a variety of River Rafting Adventures. It boasts grade 2 to 4 rapids offering an enjoyable activity by all with no experience needed.
The Wild Swing
Wild Gorge Swing – the World’s highest swing, is truly one for the brave hearts. If you have even little fear of not being in control of your life, you will have to sit this one out. Secured with full body harness, from the top of the Lehr’s waterfall you will leap off the edge and dive into the depths of this 165 meter gorge. This swing is equivalent to launching off a 55 storey building. On this Wild Swing you free fall over the edge of Lehrs Falls, getting up to a speed of 120 kilometers per hour while soaring down into an arc a 100 meters long. This really gets your heart racing.
If the swing sounds too scary, you may prefer to abseil down a 110 meter cliff next to the Lehr’s waterfall and have an opportunity to experience the ultimate sightseeing of the gorge. Having said all that, do not underestimate it, it will also have you blood rushing and get you questioning yourself about you life decisions. It starts with a fun rocky part where you feel safe, then gets to the part where you are literally swinging and you only have yourself to depend on, and of course pray that the ropes are secured. The kind of rush you get at this point is fear inducing.
Oribi Gorge Suspension Bridge Walk
Once you get rid of your fears, you will find that the walk across the suspension bridge is a journey into spectacular scenery. Spanning 80 metres across the gorge and 130 meters high the Original suspension bridge offers amazing photo opportunities for those who appreciate lovely landscapes. If you come on a busy day you will be entertained by different reactions you will encounter from different patrons. You will laugh so hard that you will forget all about your own fears.
This is the latest addition to the offerings at Wild 5 Adventures. At face value this is the easiest of the lot, until you get on that bike and have to remember that you will need to always use your back brakes to avoid being spat out. Now you have your mind stuck on that while you have to deal with the narrow and bumpy road down the dam. Now tell me what is simple and easy about this adventurous ride? This is one and the same as the other activities, it has all the characteristics of an adventure, exhilarating, adrenaline rush. What I know for sure is that it is fun and enjoyable, especially if you love speed as you can reach high speeds on some parts of the trail.
Lake Eland Game Drive
Game Drive at Lake Eland Game Reserve is one of the relaxing activities in Oribi Gorge. After all the exhilarating stuff you want to kick back and relax, while listening to Dan narrating all the lovely stories about the animals and the reserve itself. It is a place of peace and tranquility. It covers 2500 hectares with diverse ecosystems of bushvelt , grassland, coastal forest and wetlands.
This, for many is a spot where one could have their lunch after indulging in all the fun Oribi Gorge activities. In the establishment there is a restaurant that many visitors swear by and are always raving especially about their eat and go menu. After the meal you can not leave without taking in more views while perched on top of the Leopard Rock. A rock formation hanging over the gorge, adrenalin junkies like me would love nothing but hanging on the ledge with feet dangling while admiring the beauty of the area. It is one of the most Instagram (able) places in the Oribi Gorge😀.
With all these exciting and perspective changing activities to choose from, you will not be disappointed and are sure to have the time of your life. Apart from what have been highlighted above, there are other fun activities like, kayaking, horse riding, hiking, foefie slide, adventure trail and team building exercises. Therefore, let this be nothing but a guide to your fun in Oribi Gorge and not limit you to just a few. I must say I have done two trips here and I still have not gotten to all activities, so I guess three will be a charm for me; then I can finally say I have conquered the Gorge. #khenkethamzansi
