Create a TEEN blog in EIGHT steps

You do not want to be those people blatantly refusing to adapt to change even if it means simplifying and modifying their lives and even adding more life to them and their businesses. If there is one thing 2019/2020 continues to teach us is that we need to go fully digital or we will miss the wave and suffer consequences like Kodak (everyone’s case study). All this change comes with a lot of opportunities that one needs to not take for granted but grab with both hands. It is time for content creation and things will stay this way for a very long time. So what is it going to be for you? Are you jumping on it/ you will be left behind? If you would like to start a blog but you are unsure where to start, the steps below will help you start. First let’s find out what is this blogging and Why do we need it.

What is a blog?

A blog is an online journal or informational website displaying information in the reverse chronological order, with latest posts appearing first. It is a platform where a writer/ content creator or even a group of writers/ content creators share their views on an individual subject. It can be about a situation, an event or any topic you are passionate about.

Blogging is about sharing your knowledge with the world. Choosing a topic that you are passionate about makes the process of starting a successful blog so much easier.

Because blogging is an informal way of writing, starting a blog does not need to be overwhelming and intimidating. You can start a successful blog on just about any topic imaginable and with just the most basic computer skills. Simply put, if you have a smart phone you can start a blog. This even comes with an advantage of capturing moments and stories as they unfold.

Bloggers often write from a personal perspective that allows them to connect directly with their readers. Contrary to popular view, you do not need to be a professional writer. Anyone with passion for a particular topic can become a blogger and a successful one at that. Most bloggers write in a very informal and conversational style. This is my default style of writing. Most importantly, write in your own voice, you can only be yourself anyway.

How to Create a Teen Blog in 8 Steps

Learn how to create a blog by following these steps:

1. Choose a blog name.

2. Have a niche in mind

3. Pick a blogging platform

4. Choose a theme for your blog

5. Design and get your blog online.

6. Write and publish your first post.

7. Promote your blog.

8. Experiment, measure and optimize your blog

Pick a blog name

The name of your blog is something you will carry for life unless you re-brand. Therefore, you need to make sure that you chose your name wisely. There are four things you can apply to help you come up with a great name – Your name must be simple and easy to comprehend and pronounce, it must be catchy and descriptive and lastly it should be aligned to the information you will be sharing. With the above applied, you are well on your way to becoming the best blogger in town. When choosing your blog name you must think about keywords and phrases your followers/ clients will search for. Do NOT choose a name that will be difficult to remember and will not be easily picked up when people are searching for information related to your field.

Have a niche in mind

Because you know what information or message you want to send out with your blog or what problem you will be solving and you have already created the name of the blog, the next step is to identify your niche. For example you will need to pick what type of books will you be reviewing or summarizing, fiction or drama? What type of problems will you be solving.? Once that is clear then it will be easy to find your niche. Your niche is the type of people and the problem you will be solving. The topic you will be focusing on.

Pick a blogging platform

With the growth in technology innovations, there is a sea of options to choose from. There is wix, word press, square space and Blogger by Google. All these apps have advantages and disadvantages, one just need to go for what simplifies his life while ensuring that they achieve their goals. For starting out bloggers I would recommend Blogger. This platform is simple and easy to navigate. Most importantly, it is a Google platform, therefore you are almost guaranteed a help line 24/7. Who doesn’t want trusted help at their finger tips in time of distress.

Choose a theme for your blog

You will be glad to know that all these apps you would have chosen for your blog have this feature. All you need to do is browse and choose what tickles your fancy and start working on it. A theme must be simple enough for people visiting your blog to not be confused as to how does it tie up to the whole image and brand. Remember your aim is to attract people to your blog and ensure that they keep coming back for more.

Design and get your blog online.

You need to have a clear idea of the image you want to create for the blog. The cleaner and simpler to navigate the page, the better. I have found that the less the wording on the landing page the better. People are attracted to pictures and videos than words. Always have that in mind when designing your blog. If you use blogger, you will not need to look for any hosting company, as all that will be handled by Google. However, if you go with any other option you will need to have a hosting company. There are quite a few in South Africa but Afrihost, Domains and Host Africa seem to be the most popular ones.

Write and publish your first post.

This is the most taxing part of the process because you constantly worry about the quality of the content you are producing, wondering if it will be well received. However, if you have researched your topic you have nothing to worry about, because you will know that this is the information your target audience have been looking for. It can not be stressed enough that you need to always strive to solve societal problems. If you nail that, your blog will attract all the right people. All you need to do is make sure that you produce quality content. Through my apprenticeship with Paul O’Mahony I have found out that blogging does not always mean creating content from scratch. All you need to do is find people that are in the same niche as yours/ similar field and use their content on your blog.

Promote your blog.

This is the easy part but a lot of people waste a lot of their time on this step. This is one step you should not worry about if you know you are serving quality content. However, it is a very important step because it will guarantee that a lot of people know about your blog, follow it and become loyal consumers of your content.

Social media has proven to be the most effective way of promoting and marketing products and services in the new age. Again you need to research and find out where does your target audience hang out. Is it facebook, twitter, Instagram, snap chat or tik-tok? Create a content schedule and stick to it. Post on your feed and stories. Stories have become the new sensation and a lot of content creators use them. Not to be out done tik-tok entered the market and flaged itself another great app to market your products or services. If you are not on it, this is the right time to jump on it and thank me later. As referred to by the New York Times this “refreshing outlier in the social media universe” has a life of its own and has taken the world by storm.

Experiment, measure, optimize your blog

The last step is the one that will ensure your longevity in the market. A winning business is the one that constantly checks on its processes, change them up when they need to and stay a step ahead of their peers. There are so many auditing apps you can use these days such as Hubspot, Google’s webmaster tools and Woorank, to name but a few. Most of these apps come at a small subscription fee. However, that is a small price to pay compared to the gains lying ahead of your content creation career.

There is no disputing that digital media has proven itself over and over again that it’s the future. It is literally taking its rightful position as it has been neglected even when people knew of its benefits (talk about human nature).

Whether you would like to acknowledge it or not, we all have that one thing we are passionate about. If you are not using it to solve problems/ advance yourself, please allow me to tell you that you are wasting your life away and missing out on the taste of that ultimate fulfilment. While writing will form part of this new life, do not forget to do it in your own voice, stay authentic and committed to the reason why you started in the first place.
